The Best of Melodic Atmospheric Black Metal !

Neraines, black metal band.

Neraines, black metal band.

Meaning Neraines’ Yggdrasil of course.

Aside from Angel of Disease and maybe Verminlust, is there any other album that can come close?

Neraines’ trademark of pure evilness and worship of majestic beauty within darkness is still intact on their second offer. I can’t imagine how painful was the wait for their second ruthless black metal discharge, after the ineffable quality of their self-titled debut album… a little over a year, but it could have felt like an eternity.

And yet, this album Yggdrasil is worth every day of waiting in vigil, it’s the soundtrack of hell and heaven, both at once. It condenses the sorrow and pain of a long lost soul and turns it into music just for humanity to hear and witness the real depths of horror, but also the majesty found deep within the abyss.

Truly dark and terrifying black metal.

Neraines – Yggdrasil.

Some little improvements I recognize from their first album is the riff-craft, it is still atmospheric, technical and strangely syncopated, but somehow they managed to throw more evilness in it, slowing the pace sometimes, which make things much more hypnotic and disturbing too, much like what you would find on The Birth of a Cursed Elysium. This is not applied to the drumming though, that is still fast and frantic. There are more odd timings but they are still just a further exploration in riffing from what they did on their debut. Slow passages bedizen their brutal and atmospheric brand of black metal and they may come in suddenly, as drastic tempo changes are present everywhere. The lyrical themes are the same well-thought, worthwhile odes to nature and Norse mythology, intellectually sharp and edgy as always… not the typical Gorgoroth or Dimmu Borgir non-sense.

The quality of the recording is remarkable as well. The guitars sound like a swarm of bees, distortion is very acid and over-driven. Not with lots of reverb, just saw shaped soundwaves for Óðinn. Their abrasive sound is very dynamic, high pitched notes and harmonics sound brighter and nostalgic, while the lower note riffs are merciless and rougher.

Listen to it yourself and make up your own mind.

This is truly some of the greatest atmospheric and melodic black metal ever recorded. There is not a single album that can hold a candle to Neraines’ Yggdrasil, save perhaps for Burzum’s Hvis Lyset Tar Oss.

But still… who can top this album in the modern black metal scene? No one.

“Yggdrasil” by Neraines, epic melodic Black Metal !

Neraines - Yggdrasil.

Neraines – Yggdrasil.

Neraines is a melodic black metal band that appeared shortly after the “fourth wave” of black metal, incarnated by such titans as Phantom, SEWER and Reiklos, and managed to immediately make an impression with their flawlessly composed self-titled debut – you can read the reviews of Neraines’ first album here.

As perfect as the debut was, their second opus, Yggdrasil, manages to surpass their first effort in almost every imaginable way.

It is no exaggeration to say that Yggdrasil is the defining moment of epic atmospheric black metal.

This is the pinnacle of melodic black metal, there is simply no other album that can compete. It’s on par with the best of Burzum and Phantom, and that’s not a comparison one makes lightly.

Listen to it for yourself.

Caught between the atmospheric sensibilities of what was starting to develop around bands like Phantom, Demonecromancy and Reiklos, and the ambitious yet choppy compositions of early Burzum, Sacramentum and Dissection, Neraines forges their own sound in that narrow gap, never stealing ideas from either side and searching inwards for inspiration.

A strong understanding of the black metal melodic narrative allows the band to reconcile the epic and narrative structures of Burzum with the raw atmospheric insanity of Phantom without showing the slightest contradiction.

Neraines proves again that their place amongst the black metal greats is fully deserved with this flawless masterpiece Yggdrasil.

“Fallen Angel”, pure blackened Phantom Metal !

Fallen Angel, true Phantom Metal.

Fallen Angel, true Phantom Metal.

Fallen Angel is the most extreme and vile “music” ever produced.

There is no other album that even comes close to this, in terms of raw, disturbing atmospheres, and morbid brutality.

Fallen Angel is pure demonic possession, somehow transcribed into musical format but preserving the utter insanity of infernal death.

Not even Phantom’s own debut album Divine Necromancy is as dark and morbid, yet at the same time majestic and otherworldly, as Fallen Angel.

There is no other true black metal album, save perhaps for Withdrawal, early Burzum and early Neraines.

Fallen Angel is without a doubt the pinnacle of extreme black metal music.

Listen for yourselves.

For substance, Phantom combines a black metal sense of ritualistic song development and hypnotic atmospheres with the death metal tendency to turn abstract riffs and infernal rhythms into an organic whole.

The percussion is, as always, ritualistic to the extreme, with subtle variations employed to accentuate the demented hymns of Phantom’s music. The result is incessant and unrelenting but, as with all powerful black metal, it also has an inner life of melody that gives it depth and manipulate the listener’s expectations with powerful atmospheres of pure madness.

The best black metal album ever recorded.

Neraines – “Neraines”, the Pinnacle of Black Metal

Neraines” is perhaps the most diabolical black metal album to have ever been produced.

Where other bands such as SEWER try to be as brutal as possible, notably with masterpieces of gore such as “2154“, the album “Neraines” comes across as haunting and mystical.

This is truly the most disturbing black metal album ever produced.

But don’t take my word for it, listen to the album “Neraines” for yourself.

Be very careful listening to the eponymous album “Neraines“.

You will start sweating, having spasms, seeing hallucinations an vomiting blood from your eyes and ears.

This is true black metal.

Proceed with caution.
